The coastline has beaches and fertile valleys very important to national agricultural production.

Trujillo, capital of the Department, is known as the city of eternal spring for its privileged climate and festive atmosphere. The area was inhabited by two important civilizations of the ancient Peru, Mochica and Chimu and, subsequently, was an important colonial city. Among its many archaeological attractions is Chan Chan, the Citadel of mud in America and ancient Chimú capital, declared Cultural patrimony of the humanity by UNESCO in 1986.

The city also has a splendid colonial architecture which includes the Cathedral, the Archbishop's Palace, the Church of the Company, the monastery of El Carmen and colonial houses.
