Puerto Maldonado, the capital city, is obligated to access some of the national parks and reserves in the area and has been, at various times, an important center of exploitation of rubber, wood, gold and oil. Currently two of the main economic activities of the Department are the ecotourism and the extraction of chestnuts.
About 10 Km from Puerto Maldonado and after an hour and a half walk lays the Sandoval Lake, surrounded by aguajales, orchids, kapok, mahogany and palms mauritias of up to 30 meters high. The Lake is also home to a wide variety of species such as toucans, macaws, parrots, herons, tapirs, turtles and refuge of the river otter and the black lizard, both in danger of extinction. In the surroundings of the Valencia Lake, 60 km from Puerto Maldonado by the Madre De Dios River, several native communities dedicated to the fishing of damsel fish, goldfish and paiches and it is also habitat for a variety of species of flora and fauna.
The Manu National Park (1 716.295 has), located in the departments of Cuzco and Madre De Dios, is home to more than 800 species of birds, 200 species of mammals, giant trees and is also home to native communities. This is the park that set the world record for watching birds in a single day in one place, with 324 species.
The Tambopata-Candamo National Reserve (274,690 has) is known for possessing the greatest diversity of species of mammals, trees, insects and birds of the world and holds the world record in number of species of butterflies. In the Bahuaja-Sonene National Park (1,091,416 has) is the only existing tropical wet savanna in Peru. Include maned wolf and the deer of wetlands, species in danger of extinction, as well as the giant anteater, giant otter, the wild dog, the black lizard, and the happy eagle.
Full jungle Department; it has areas of high forest and lowland. It is bordered to the North by Ucayali and Brazil; on the East by Brazil and Bolivia; to the West with Cusco; to the South with Cusco and Puno. Its capital Puerto Maldonado is at the confluence of the River Madre De Dios and the Tambopata River. Its geography is the hardest for the construction of roads, as the Andes plunge into the jungle forming gulfs.
